In May of 2016, The Mariachi Institute of Chicago (MIC) opened their doors. MIC is a community-based music organization. The organization provides music education through mariachi music to young aspiring musicians ages 8-16 from the Southwest side communities of Chicago. The Institute is the collaborative work of parents and teachers, and their efforts to provide an accessible, local music program to children and teenagers in under-served areas. The mission of The Mariachi Institute of Chicago is to create a cultural bridge for students and their heritage through mariachi music. Students are challenged musically while learning traditional music representative of their culture. The organization currently serves more than eighty students providing weekly music lessons in the afternoons and on weekends.
